Making Money and Swallows

I think this song is really fantastic. I love that Carey's keyboards are cranked high in the mix and it features a rare double tracked TAC vocal. The overall new wave 80s vibe is refreshing too and maybe hints at a direction the band wanted to go in more with Desire Lines. It certainly is a companion piece to the similar new wavey 1982 sonics of 'Troublemaker' and 'Break it to you Gently'. Swallows gorgeous and the pedal steel solo is beautiful. I like how it goes on for a for more measures and is drawn out a bit. I certainly like the "country and melancholia" sound of songs like 'Forests and Sands' and 'Desire Lines'...I hope the band continues to explore these genre experiments and develops and evolves from the string laden 60s orchestral pop of the previous records.

Yeah, the pedal steel has gone down nicely I reckon. I'm also keen to hear/see a version of Country Mile from the recent US tour with the pedal steel in it.
That song's been begging for that treatment from the get go I reckon.

I saw them in Detroit in July and you're right, Country Mile was stunning with Kenny's slide and the pedal steel all entwined with Carey's keys.  In fact it was rather heavy and kind of an emotional crusher especially with the lyrics and that fearful uncertainty of the future that the song really captures.  The real revelation was  Books Written For Girls which was almost cinematic...I really was drawn in by the delicacy and...heck i don't know, power or something of this song?  It was quite moving and heavy in a weird way.  Maturity and adulthood and all that.  Maybe just the mood that it set.

Making Money has been stuck in my head for a good couple of weeks now...I find myself just randomly singing that 'i got a funny way of making money' line...it's kind of driving me crazy actually.  

There are a few clips of them doing Country Mile from this most recent tour, however I think a lot of them are distorted, in the red, tinny phone/camera recordings.  Still worth listenign because you may be able to find a decent sounding version.

Cheers, I should go digging, I love that song, and that era of the band in general. Especially that 2007 concert where Traceyanne is hammered and wearing that white dress.
Great version of Country Mile on that song but yeah, it's begging for the pedal steel.

I finally got round to checking out the set from July that blurecu uploaded which has Country Mile, and like you said, a stunning version of Books written for girls in it.

Was nice to hear that revisited. That song holds up really well I reckon.
