This is great news that Camera Obscura are back touring again!!  Though sad for me that they won't make out to the western part of the US.  Maybe they'll play a new song or two....one can only wish.  If tonybolony and modrevolve or others that do attend the shows can post a report on this site, that would be great.

Can't wait for the Session EP.  Hopefully it will be available in my local record shop.  If not, available to order on the 4AD or the Camera Obscura site.

Easter ep is just around the corner now... excited to get this one - i like the arrangement of tunes as only live can do.
Also they posted a link to another interview on the fb page...

Well it''s been a while! Caught the band in Birmingham last night, did manage to see them in Newcastle last year as well. Great gig, such a strong set of tunes to pick from these days. I'm not one for listing all the songs a band pays but I will mention "Book written for Girls". The version of this that did last night was stunning in it's beautiful simplicity. Wish we could be in Glasgow tonight!

Graeme, if you read this we hope you doing well. Tom & Orynthia, Bristol

hi tom,yep...I`m here, tom my shame I haven`t seen them on this tour just didn`t fall right for me...I was ponderin a trip to Glasgow but after just coming back from Barcelona, driving to Manchester on Tuesday to watch gruff rhys film"american interior" with a Q&A with gruff afterwards, then a drive to Altringham to see colorama on Wednesday it was all too much...glad you enjoyed the show...as you know they have had a habit of throwing "books written for girls" in over the years, its such a beautiful song and a favourite of most fans I think. The simplicity of the song(did she play it alone?) she can do as there is not much else in the song and works great on just acoustic guitar,i even have a go at it my self. I have been reading all the pre tour interviews and stuff and was interested as ever to try and get a hold on where they are right now? Its something I shouldn't do but I suppose I am interested in more than the music and really that is the only thing a fan of a band shoud try and enjoy, as well as any live performances. A friend of mine was in London coincidently on the night they played, he had been a fan since those early tentative steps and peel championing. I asked if he was going and he said no,he had earned his camera obscura stripes and last time he saw them in London the stage at the scala had over powered them. I doubt if that would happen now as I believe they were playing with 7 on stage this tour,i assume it is nigel and the two tims, thats a wage bill. I may be wrong but I am going by what information I have picked up. Again on this tour there has been the usual complaints of noisy crowds, non audience participation and lack of on stage persona. All things that we have gotten used to over the years.I bought the "daughter" 4AD sessions EP yesterday which was wonderful, one of the gigs of the last few years was when they played the Anglican cathedral in Liverpool but it prompted me to put on the Camera Obscura sessions. These are two massive works of art and the recordings of these sessions are so beautiful. I took stock, every single album has been amazing in its own right sure some tracks are stronger than other, just like some girls are bigger than others. I love this band but you are hearing the 18 years thing all the time time now, sure the songs are well crafted, from the heart..lyrically poignant and performed with an ease. The recent edition on Tim on slide guitar and second guitar was met with concern by myself. Is he needed in camera obscura, is it just a job for daddy and obviously it will help on tour now as they probably split duties(or maybe slightly more...hahaha talkin from experience). There is no doubt his playing has added something to the live sound and you either love or hate slide,i happen to love it...like when Costello went to Nashville. There has been talk bout the anticipation both before and after of life on the road with Gene(will the low life loose its appeal) haha couldn`t help that. Anyways,it has been interesting to hear mention of"we were able to give up our jobs for a while" hinting that being in Camera osbcura is never going to pay all the bills. The sense of now or never seems to have passed and gone. Some members have balanced the place in the band with futher income for the dailys and paying the bills. There has been talk lately from Lily Allen saying that joe public think pop stars are mega earners and the reality being something different. That the actual profit in the recorded song is minimum and I agree and also she says that playing private functions is where the money is or possibly mega sell out shows but even they just about balance with road costs? And if you have seven band members how does that equate? The ongoing battle tracyanne has had with this always comes through in interviews and now she is a mother too. I have always been concerned about the pressure on her even though I really don't know her at all but because of my over interest in more than the music.I started this forum because I wanted a place for people who have know the band a long time or just seen them the first time to have somewhere to go and vent their emmotions. These powerful songs could only evoke such feelings and if you read the lyrics along with the records, I believe they are better than you think. The comparisons and pidgeon holing of them being  from the same stable ,soundalikes, whatever of B&S doesn`t hold true at all now but I feel it never did but I can see the reasons why. Some of my well informed friends loved the early songs with John and think that is now a loss, Kenny used to write more and careys piano playing in times gone by has been more articulate. All these thing though do no detract from the band wanting to progress their sound. The two albums with Jari had a synthetic feel to them but still two mighty albums, I suppose you cant please everyone, there always someone saying something...is the world as soft as lace?  The Tucker album is a bit more earthy but not a million miles from the two before. I think the idea of going to Portland was a good one for a break if nothing else and many bands will use their talents to enjoy travels hopefully to somewhere they love and feel at home. Its a vibrant place. So what now, all these factors, the"age"thing, draining, Gene, funds, sales, target areas, guarantee`s and any number of other factors in a bands success. Is it enough to write great songs and perform them well. It should be but that doesn`t put food on the table, nappies on the baby without all the other things that make it a viable business because this is what it is. As much as its easy for me to fire the old dansette up sit back and enjoy and contemplate my 9-5 next week. I love this band and continue to buy everything and feel at a loss I missed them this mini tour. Good luck to them all.....say hi to orythnia ,tom....this site is easy to find now(camera obscura forum) first hit,my work is done...camera obscura have a muted, non committal fan base on the whole...that's just the way it is...of to see B&S at pitchfork in paris October/November.....get over the bridge to Cardiff both gruff rhys and colorama live there and are amazing.....see you on your travels soon....on the next camera obscura tour

Nice to hear from you. In relation to Books.... It was just Tracyanne and Tim on steel - wonderful. Good to hear that you are still getting out to see lot's of stuff, the dame is true for us but sometimes you can't see everything that you would like to. Funny enough we didn't think that we were going to make it to this tour so I wrote an piece on the band for http://therestreasureeverywhere.net which is a website that we run along with my nephew. The next day I went into work and they said I could have the time off. Next thing we know we are in Birmingham and Gav took care of us getting in. The band reported my piece on their Facebook page and suddenly over 20,000 people had seen it!

It is still hard for the band and they still have to make tough choices.

Oh and by the way, sounds like the GHTG uk opening will be in Glasgow in the autumn and we shall be going. Last saw B&S at End of the Road and they were on top form, seeing them in Paris will be amazing.

wow.. some great reads here! thanks for the reviews to whet the appetite for the up-coming shows for us over here. Fantastic site and incredible write-up Tom! havent seen it before but will now peruse because you really nailed the feeling this band evokes. for me personally, i was introduced to the band while working at a horrible office with miserable people and was having a tough time of it. a co-worker, who i rarely spoke to, out of the blue lent me underachievers and just said "listen to this - you'll feel better". still not sure how songs about heartbreak and heartache set to mellow pop music should make ya feel better but he was only too right. been a huge huge fan ever since. you're blog and reminiscing strangely brought it all back.. how i fell in love with this music, the songs and the band. thanks for that!
btw.. is the title of the site a nod to calvin? (another favourite!)

Hi Bolony,

Thank you, it's really nice to hear that the piece made a connection. I love your story of how you found the band (or the other way round!).

I'm sure that you will enjoy seeing the band in the USA again.

And yes you correct about the origin of the name of the site.

Cheers,

Tom
