Still enthralled after last night's unbelievably superb set in Santa Barbara- might anyone have the set list? I'd be very much obliged!

Sincere thanks and regards,

Jeff

PostSubject: Amazing show!   Mon Jun 17, 2013 11:36 pm

Very briefly, last night's set was utterly superb- alongside the poorly attended Neal Halstead show at the same venue a few months ago, one of the very best concerts I have seen in years. CO came on a fair bit after 10p; having waited since before 7, the crowd was on the very edge of becoming surly when they took the stage to rapturous applause. Opening with "Do It Again" the band was in cracking form, and showed no sign of jet lag. Tracyanne was looking absolutely gorgeous (someone actually complimented her on her hair later in the show), and in very fine voice. Despite the rather terrible acoustics of the venue, and some poor soundboard work from the venue's employee, the show was quite remarkable. I didn't have my phone, but I think I remember most of the set list. I'm sure I've missed a couple, and I know it's out of order- I'd be obliged for any help with this:

Do It Again
Let's Get Out Of This Country
New Year's Resolution
This Is Love
Tears For Affairs
Swans
Fifth in Line
Lloyd
Troublemaker
Every Weekday
Teenager
---

Encore:

French Navy
Razzle Dazzle Rose

Standouts for me included "Do It Again", "Let's Get Out", "Swans", "Troublemaker" (a song I didn't have all that much love for until hearing it last night) and the excellent- and surprising- choice of "Rose" for a final song after "French Navy". The band turned "Rose" into a rather rocking affair, and it justified the enormous applause it got. Tim's horn work was particularly fine last night, Carey was in great form, and the band is very, very tight.

But, really, the entire show was incredible- Soho is a very small venue, it was completely sold out, the audience was up for it, and the set flowed rather perfectly toward its conclusion. The band is much, much more self-assured than last time I saw them here in the States. If last night's show is any indication, this tour could very well put them over the proverbial top with regards to popularity here. Belle and Sebastian are playing the Santa Barbara Bowl in a few weeks' time, and it seems entirely plausible that CO could follow suit on their next tour, based on the reception and buzz the record has garnered here. And, my unrequited (as yet- hope springs eternal) love for Tracyanne remains undiminished...

Really, one of the best bands of the age, touring behind an ace record, playing in a tiny venue with a hugely supportive crowd on a warm summer night in Santa Barbara: I'm truly grateful I was able to experience this.

Thank you, Camera Obscura...

Regards,

Jeff

Thanks, Jeff for your review.  It looks like a fabulous time was had by all.  I believe the entire show was posted on youtube.  I counted 17 songs!  I think you are missing Come Back Margaret, If Looks Could Kill, Desire Lines and Break It To You Gently.  The band sounded superb with Tracyanne's vocals in top form.  My favorites were This Is Love, Do It Again and Come Back Margaret.  A splendid performance from a great band.

great review and exactly why I started it today, back then...."rose"has been the closer all tour so far,it seems to be a set, setlist and we all have our favourites...that delay sounds a bit dodgy, may have been out of their control...I wouldn`t like to hang about so long....great to hear its on youtube, cant wait to watch it......so thanks for the review...great,nice to see the board moving some.....cheers

nice review Jeff - thanks for that!  i've just checked out the youtubes of the show and strangely the acoustics on the vids are better than the typical.. they do appear to be in top form.  i still think troublemaker is my favourite tune on desirelines so yer touting it makes me anxious to hear it live.. nice baby bump on that vid too!  i love songs that Carey can go to town on and that screams keys to me..
i think that they've played Rose for the last track of the regular set or encore for every show i've been to and they always rock it right out!  thats a great example for me of a tune that i never cared for until i saw it live and now it has to be my favourite at the shows..

Very sincere thanks to everyone for your responses, and, especially to Steven for your input on the setlist! The Wiltern show in LA tonight should be amazing!

Be well and warm regards,

Jeff

That's a sweet setlist! Can't wait to check this out on youtube when I get home. Fifth in line seems like it's be a total gem live.

Watching the footage now, Kenny Mckeeve is such a good guitarist! I love how his parts are always so tasteful.
He really is classy. And the same with Lee.
I love how those guys, you can tell they could play so much more but all they do is play tastefully and serve the song.
Fuckin' love this band!
They really are sounding like they've warmed up into their set now, so jealous of everyone that  gets to see them!!

yeah, kennys playin is so understated but its funny his solo`s are so simple but really effective within the context of the songs...also its bout time mention was mentioned about careys backing vocals both on the record and live...stronger,all good........

Yeah I've always liked Carey's vocals and just her overall stage presence. Neko's vox on the new album are very nice too.
Whoever posted those links to this show is an absolute gem.
Loving it.
They're sounding so good right now. The stiffness of  the UK shows sounds like it's played out now, but who can blame them for being a bit stiff after that long away?

It's probably as close as I'll get unless they play do any shows in Australia. I reckon if they did, I"d fly over to catch a couple for sure.
